Compostable electronics could ease the e-waste problem

Some day soon your obsolete gadgets could be as compostable as banana peels and spent coffee grounds. Researchers from the Young Investigator Network at Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) in Germany are developing printed electronics from natural and compostable materials that could help make a dent in the millions of tons of electronic waste piling up worldwide each year.

Instead of silicon, heavy metals and other elements that can stick around for a while, even potentially creating toxic hazards as they break down in landfills, the researchers are working with biodegradable materials including semiconductors and dyes made of plant extracts and insulators fashioned out of gelatin.

"These may not be as long-lived as the inorganic alternatives, but they easily survive the service life of disposable electronics," says Dr. Gerardo Hernandez-Sosa, leader of the Young Investigator Group of KIT.

When they're no longer needed, he says the components can be thrown in with biowaste or compost where they will rot like any other organic matter that decomposes. He notes however, that some products with the word "organic" in their names like organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) aren't biodegradable in the same way.

"We call all synthetic materials that are based on carbon 'organic'. But this term does not tell us anything about environmental compatibility," he explains.

Instead of using metals or metalloids like silicon, the researchers are working with carrier foils made from natural materials like starches and cellulose, similar to the recent work of a Wisconsin-based team. Hard gelatins like those used to make drug capsules can also be good for insulation.

A key part of creating fully biodegradable electronics will be developing inks for printing circuits that have all the required environmental and conductive properties and also won't plug printers, among other concerns.

Addressing this challenge is the current focus of the research team. The scientists hope to have compostable organic electronics ready for suppliers or store shelves in about three years.

Vitamin C: The exercise replacement?

Overweight and obese adults are advised to exercise to improve their health, but more than 50 percent do not do so. New research to be presented at the 14th International Conference on Endothelin: Physiology, Pathophysiology and Therapeutics suggests that taking vitamin C supplements daily can have similar cardiovascular benefits as regular exercise in these adults.

The blood vessels of overweight and obese adults have elevated activity of the small vessel-constricting protein endothelin (ET)-1. Because of the high ET-1 activity, these vessels are more prone to constricting, becoming less responsive to blood flow demand and increasing risk of developing vascular disease. Exercise has been shown to reduce ET-1 activity, but incorporating an exercise regimen into a daily routine can be challenging. This study, conducted at the University of Colorado, Boulder, examined whether vitamin C supplements, which have been reported to improve vessel function, can also lower ET-1 activity. The researchers found that daily supplementation of vitamin C (500 mg/day, time-released) reduced ET-1-related vessel constriction as much as walking for exercise did. Vitamin C supplementation represents an effective lifestyle strategy for reducing ET-1-mediated vessel constriction in overweight and obese adults, the researchers wrote.

A simple path to resilience

By Sheryl M. Ness, R.N. August 21, 2015

Life is a challenge. Each day brings new opportunities to learn how to manage the many things that challenge you. Building resilience and learning about practices that help protect your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing may seem complicated. However, there are simple things that you can do to focus on your inner strength.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Move every day to increase your energy and improve your health. Talk a walk with a friend or have fun simply dancing to music for 10 minutes.
  • Make a plan to eat well by including fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Have healthy snacks handy and remember to drink enough water to hydrate your body.
  • Maintain your health by taking time for prevention and visiting your health care provider when recommended. Remember to listen to your body if you notice new changes that concern you.
  • Find time to relax each day to take your mind off the things you find stressful. Try meditation or a creative outlet that you love to do.
  • Get plenty of sleep to refresh and renew your body for the new day.
  • Take time to discover new things each day that bring meaning, purpose and joy into your life.

As you work with these ideas, reflect on how these simple strategies can reduce your stress and improve the health of your body, mind and spirit.

What have you tried recently to improve your resilience? Please share what has worked for you.
