11 setback recovery tips

Don't worry, plateaus and lapses are normal. Recommit to your goals with these strategies.

Has it been a while since the scale moved in the right direction? Is motivation waning? Whether you’ve hit a plateau or started slipping back into old habits, it’s never too late to get back on course. The key? Stay positive and don't be hard on yourself. Simply be curious about your choices, and use your experiences as learning opportunities for the future. Don't give up — use these tips to get back on track.

Plateaus

It's normal to hit plateaus. Most people reach one after six months of weight loss. Try these solutions:

  • Review your food and activity records to make sure you haven't let yourself backtrack with larger portions or less exercise.
  • Reduce your daily calorie intake by 200 calories, unless this puts you in a range that's too low for good health.
  • Gradually increase your daily exercise time by 15 to 30 minutes. If possible, also increase the intensity.
  • Focus on three- to four-week trends in weight loss instead of daily changes.
  • Reassess your program and goals. If it's too much to decrease calories or increase activity, it's better to be satisfied with the weight you have lost than to throw in the towel and regain it.

Dealing with lapses

A lapse occurs when you revert to your old behaviors temporarily. If several lapses have occurred in a short time, it's tempting to think your weight-loss plan is too challenging. Not to worry; a lapse is just a short-term bump in the road. Following these tips will help you regain ground:

  • Don't let negative thoughts take over. Mistakes happen, and each day is a chance to start anew.
  • Take another small step. Changing your life doesn't happen all at once. Keep in mind that changing behaviors in small ways can add up to a big difference in your life.
  • Ask for and accept support. Accepting support from other people isn't a sign of weakness, nor does it mean that you're failing. Get support from others when you have difficult days.
  • Plan your strategy. Clearly identify the problem, and then create a list of possible solutions. If one solution doesn't work, try another until you find one that does.
  • Work out your frustration with exercise. Keep it upbeat and even fun — don't use physical activity as a punishment.
  • Recommit to your goals.Review them to make sure they're still realistic.

Although lapses can be disappointing, they can also teach you a lot. Perhaps your goals are unrealistic or certain strategies don't work. Most importantly, realize that all hope isn't lost when you lapse. Just recharge your motivation, recommit to your program and return to healthy behaviors.

Cholesterol: Top foods to improve your numbers

Diet can play an important role in lowering your cholesterol. Here are the top foods to lower your cholesterol and protect your heart.

By Mayo Clinic Staff

Can a bowl of oatmeal help lower your cholesterol? How about a handful of walnuts or an avocado? A few simple tweaks to your diet — like these, along with exercise and other heart-healthy habits — might help you lower your cholesterol.

Oatmeal, oat bran and high-fiber foods

Oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which reduces your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the "bad" cholesterol. Soluble fiber is also found in such foods as kidney beans, apples, pears, barley and prunes.

Soluble fiber can reduce the absorption of cholesterol into your bloodstream. Five to 10 grams or more of soluble fiber a day decreases your total and LDL cholesterol. Eating 1 1/2 cups of cooked oatmeal provides 6 grams of fiber. If you add fruit, such as bananas, you'll add about 4 more grams of fiber. To mix it up a little, try steel-cut oatmeal or cold cereal made with oatmeal or oat bran.

Fish and omega-3 fatty acids

Eating fatty fish can be heart healthy because of its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce your blood pressure and risk of developing blood clots. In people who have already had heart attacks, fish oil — or omega-3 fatty acids — may reduce the risk of sudden death.

Although omega-3 fatty acids don't affect LDL levels, because of their other heart benefits, the American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of fish a week. The highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids are in:

  • Mackerel
  • Lake trout
  • Herring
  • Sardines
  • Albacore tuna
  • Salmon
  • Halibut

You should bake or grill the fish to avoid adding unhealthy fats. If you don't like fish, you can also get small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids from foods such as ground flaxseed or canola oil.

You can take an omega-3 or fish oil supplement to get some of the benefits, but you won't get other nutrients in fish, such as selenium. If you decide to take a supplement, talk to your doctor about how much you should take.

Walnuts, almonds and other nuts

Walnuts, almonds and other tree nuts can improve blood cholesterol. Rich in mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, walnuts also help keep blood vessels healthy.

Eating about a handful (1.5 ounces, or 42.5 grams) a day of most nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachio nuts and walnuts, may reduce your risk of heart disease. Make sure the nuts you eat aren't salted or coated with sugar.

All nuts are high in calories, so a handful will do. To avoid eating too many nuts and gaining weight, replace foods high in saturated fat with nuts. For example, instead of using cheese, meat or croutons in your salad, add a handful of walnuts or almonds.

Avocados

Avocados are a potent source of nutrients as well as monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). According to a recent study, adding an avocado a day to a heart-healthy diet can help improve LDL levels in people who are overweight or obese.

People tend to be most familiar with avocados in guacamole, which usually is eaten with high-fat corn chips. Try adding avocado slices to salads and sandwiches or eating them as a side dish. Also try guacamole with raw cut vegetables, such as cucumber slices.

Replacing saturated fats, such as those found in meats, with MUFAs are part of what makes the Mediterranean diet heart healthy.

Supercomputer Yellowstone

Over a dozen miles of cable help run key components of Yellowstone supercomputer

Over a dozen miles of cable permit the supercomputer Yellowstone's tens of thousands of processors and other key components to interact with each other. Yellowstone is located at the NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research)-Wyoming Supercomputing Center.

The center, which was dedicated in October 2012, will offer researchers the opportunity to develop, access and share complex models and data at incredibly powerful speeds. Yellowstone has the ability to work at 1.5 petaflops--equal to 1.5 quadrillion (a million billion) mathematical operations per second. Its speed is comparable to 7 billion people (the world's population) each simultaneously conducting 200,000 calculations a second.

Three is a magic number, and Aspen, Colorado has hit that enchanted numeral by becoming the third city in the U.S. to power itself with 100 percent renewable energy. Aspen Times reports that the city has reached the milestone after more than a decade of work, by employing wind, solar and geothermal energy. Its efforts put the Rocky Mountain hub in a very exclusive renewable energy club, along with Burlington, Vermont and Greensburg, Kansas.

It was a very forward-thinking goal and a truly remarkable achievement,” says Aspen’s Director of Utilities and Environmental Initiatives, David Hornbacher. “This means we are powered by the forces of nature, predominantly water and wind with a touch of solar and landfill gas.”

The city’s clean energy transition became official on Thursday last week when the city signed an agreement with Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska – which replaced the remaining 20 to 25 percent of its energy needs it was previously getting from coal.

“We’ve demonstrated that it’s possible,” and that a small, progressive community can work together to be a pathway for others, Hornbacher told the Aspen Times. “Realistically, we hope we can inspire others to achieve these higher goals.”

Georgetown, Texas is expected to be fully powered by renewable energy as of 2017, and according to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, others have committed, including: San Diego and San Jose, California.

Like the Swiss Army Knife of tiny homes, the Ecocapsule packs everything you need into one very efficient, compact design. Replete with rather luxurious amenities, including a double bed, kitchenette, storage space, and bathroom with a shower and a toilet that collects bio waste, the Ecocapsule can used as a tiny home just for you, a pop-up hotel, a humanitarian refuge, or even an electric car charging station. Its 9744Wh battery is powered by a 750W silent wind turbine and 600W solar outputs that enable it to operate completely off-grid. A dual-power system offers an additional source of electricity during periods without sufficient sunlight or wind. The structure’s rounded shape also helps to easily collect rain water, which is then purified with a built-in filtration system.

The amazing micro-dwelling is perfect for nature lovers, scientists, photographers, rangers and anyone who wants to stay off-grid for long stretches of time. The architects also recommend it as an urban dwelling for singles in high-rent areas such as Silicon Valley or NYC. The little “egg” home measures just 4.5 meters (14.6 feet) in length, 2.4 meters (7.9 feet) in width, and 2.5 meters in height (8.2 feet), with a reasonable living space around eight square meters (86 square feet). When you’re ready to move on to your next destination, the capsule fits snugly into a standard transportation container.

Nice Architects plans to announce pricing for the Ecocapsule egg home at the end of 2015 – just in time for pre-orders. They’ve focused on reducing the size and weight of the pod so that it can be easily transported – approximate shipping costs range from 1500 Euros from Slovakia to Melbourne, to 2200 Euros from Slovakia to New York. Nice Architects plans to launch one version of the Ecocapsule initially, and they plan to offer additional customizations after the first units are sold.

Diet and migraines

by Maria Masters

As if migraines weren't awful enough, it can be downright overwhelming to sidestep all the things that could set off an attack. Problem is, food triggers not only vary from person to person, but much of our knowledge about them comes less from carefully controlled studies and more from observing patients, explainsLee Peterlin, DO, the director of headache research at Johns Hopkins University.
Before you cut out every one of these items from your diet, here's something to keep in mind: Fasting or skipping meals can be an even bigger migraine trigger for women, says Dr. Peterlin. So just keep that advice in mind as you go through this list, then turn to your fridge. (Though you might want to reconsider that charcuterie…)

Next: Alcohol
