Women can lower their risk of having a baby born with a birth defect by following some basic health guidelines throughout their reproductive years. This is important because many birth defects happen very early during pregnancy, sometimes before a woman even knows that she is pregnant. For this year's National Birth Defects Prevention Month, we encourage all women and their loved ones to make a PACT for prevention. But some jobs involve exposures, like chemical or physical agents, that might be harmful to pregnant or breastfeeding women or that have been linked to birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes. If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, reducing these exposures before and during pregnancy can help increase your chances for having a healthy baby. It is also important to protect your home and family from chemicals that might be brought home by you or other family members from work. Avoid drinking alcohol at any time during pregnancyWhen a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, so does her baby. Alcohol that's in the woman's blood passes to the baby through the umbilical cord. There is no known safe amount of alcohol use during pregnancy or while trying to get pregnant. There is also no safe time during pregnancy to drink. All types of alcohol are equally harmful, including all wines and beer. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and a range of lifelong physical, behavioral, and intellectual disabilities.
