How To Make Sense of a Fertilizer Label

You want to make sure your plants are getting the nutrition they need to do you proud, but there are so many choices when it comes to selecting fertilizer. How do you know what is really in the bag? There are certain rules that all fertilizer makers must follow when they label their products and understanding these rules can make comparing fertilizers much easier.

Here's How:

1. Major Ingredients: Most commercial fertilizers have 3 numbers on the front label, separated by dashes. For example: 5-10-5. This is the fertilizer analysis or percentage by weight of the 3 major nutrients plants need: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, in that order. These are abbreviated as N-P-K.

   So if you purchased a 10 pound bag of fertilizer labeled 5-10-5, it would contain 5% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus and 5% potassium. The remaining 80% could be comprised of other nutrients and filler.

2. 1st Number = Nitrogen: The first number gives the concentration of nitrogen in the product. Nitrogen encourages foliage growth, among other benefits. A 5-10-5 fertilizer would contain 5% nitrogen by weight. So for every pound of fertilizer applied there is really only .05 pounds of nitrogen. (The 10 pound bag mentioned above would contain .5 lb. nitrogen.)
3. 2nd Number = Phosphorous: The middle number refers to the concentration of phosphorous. Phosphorous contributes to many fundamental plant processes such as rooting and setting flower buds. A 5-10-5 fertilizer would contain 10% phosphorous by weight or .1 pounds of phosphorous. (The 10 pound bag mentioned above would contain 1 lb. of phosphorus.)
4. 3rd Number = Potassium: The final number states the concentration of potassium. Potassium contributes to the overall health and vigor of plants. Again, a 5-10-5 fertilizer would contain 5% potassium by weight or .05 pounds of potassium. (The 10 pound bag mentioned above would contain .5 lb. potassium.)
5. Complete Fertilizers: Fertilizers that contain all three major nutrients are considered complete fertilizers. There are specialized fertilizers which are called incomplete because they lack one or more major nutrients such as a fertilizer labeled 0-20-20.
6. Fertilizer Ratio (An easier comparison): An easier way to compare the numbers is to break them down to the fertilizer ratio or the amounts of the 3 major nutrients in relation to each other. A 5-10-5 fertilizer has a ratio of 1-2-1. This becomes important when looking for a fertilizer for a specific need. A 1-2-1 ratio is often recommended for vegetables, which need plenty of phosphorous to set fruit. 1-2-1 could be 5-10-5, 10-20-10 or any similar extrapolation.
7. Other Ingredients: Any additional ingredients will be listed on the side label. This may include other nutrients like calcium, magnesium, iron, micronutrients and even the percentage of organic matter.
8. Organic fertilizers: Organic fertilizers must specify which nutrient(s) is organic and it must be identified as either synthetic and/or natural, by percentage. For example: 20% of Nitrogen organic (6% synthetic, 14% organic). When something is labeled "organic", it simply means it contains carbon atoms. However we have come to expect that organic fertilizer, like organic food, comes from natural processes and contains nothing synthetic. That tends to be the case, especially as consumers become more educated, but be sure to read the label before you make a purchase.

Tips:

1. Having a soil test done before you start adding amendments will tell you what you actually need. If your soil pH is too high or too low, your plants will not be able to access some nutrients, even if they are present in the soil.
2. There is no one size fits all fertilizer. Fertilizer choice depends on the type of plant being grown and the soil it is being grown in.
3. Always follow the label instructions when using any registered garden product. Just because a little is good, it doesn't follow that a lot is better.
4. You can use less of fertilizers with high analysis numbers than with lower numbers. Five pounds of 10-20-10 would give you the same nutrient value as 10 pounds of 5-10-5.
5. Organic fertilizers made from natural ingredients often have lower concentrations of the three major nutrients, so you will need to use larger amounts. However, they do contain many other nutrients that feed both the plant and the soil. If you are using a synthetic fertilizer, you should supplement with some type of organic matter such as compost or manure, to maintain soil health.

Top 10 Tomato Growing Tips

Is it ever too early to be thinking about your tomato plants? Not if you're the competitive tomato gardening type who wants the earliest and sweetest tomato on the block. Unfortunately, growing great tomatoes doesn't just happen. Sample some of the science experiments on sale at your grocer's this winter, if you don't believe me. Choose your favorite varieties to grow, start them off right and control problems before they happen. Start here with some time tested tomato growing tips, to insure your bragging rights this year.

1. Don’t Crowd Seedlings.

If you are starting tomatoes from seed, be sure to give the seedlings plenty of room to branch out. Crowded conditions inhibit their growth, so transplant them into their own individual 4 in. pot, shortly after they get their first true leaves.

2. Provide Lots of Light.

Tomato seedlings need strong, direct light. Days are short during winter, so even placing them near a very sunny window may not provide them with sufficient natural light. Unless you are growing them in a greenhouse, your best option is to use some type of artificial plant lighting, for 14-18 hours every day.

To ensure the plants grow stocky, not spindly, keep the young plants only a couple of inches from florescent grow lights. You will need to raise the lights (or lower the plants) as the seedlings grow. When you're ready to plant them outside, choose the sunniest part of your vegetable garden.

3. Put a Fan on Your Seedlings.

It seems tomato plants need to move and sway in the breeze, to develop strong stems. That happens naturally outdoors, but if you are growing your seedlings inside, provide a breeze by turning a fan on them for 5-10 minutes, twice a day. Another option is to ruffle them by gently rubbing your hand back and forth across their tops for a few minutes, several times a day. It's a bit more effort, but their wonderful tomato scent will rub off on you, as a bonus.

4. Preheat the Soil in Your Garden.

Tomatoes love heat. Cover the planting area with black or red plastic a couple of weeks before you intend to plant. Those extra degrees of soil warmth will translate into earlier tomatoes.

A reader, David, wrote to say he thinks clear plastic works best. It "...lets the sun's energy through and then traps that heat energy." Plus it causes weed seeds to germinate and then fries them, so they won't come back.

5. Bury Them.

Plant your tomato plants deeper than they come in the pot, all the way up to the top few leaves. When planted this way, tomatoes are able to develop roots all along their stems. And more roots will make for a stronger plant.

You can either dig a deep hole or simply dig a shallow trench and lay the plant sideways. It will quickly straighten itself up and grow toward the sun. Just be careful not to drive your stake or cage into the buried stem.

6. Mulch Later.

Hold off on mulching until after the ground has had a chance to warm up. While mulching does conserve water and prevents the soil and soil born diseases from splashing up on the plants, if you put it down too early it will also shade and therefore cool the soil. Try using plastic mulch for heat lovers like tomatoes and peppers. (See Tip #4)

7. Remove the Bottom Leaves.

Once your tomato plants reach about 3 ft. tall, remove the leaves from the bottom 1 ft. of stem. These are the oldest leaves and they are usually the first leaves to develop fungus problems. As the plants fill out, the bottom leaves get the least amount of sun and air circulation. And being close to the ground, soil born pathogens can easily splash up onto them. Spraying weekly with compost tea also seems to be effective at warding off fungus diseases.

8. Pinch & Prune for More Tomatoes

Pinch and remove suckers that develop in the crotch joint of two branches. They won’t bear fruit and will take energy away from the rest of the plant. But go easy on pruning the rest of the plant. You can thin out a few leaves to allow the sun to reach the ripening fruit, but it's the leaves that are photosynthesizing and creating the sugars that give flavor to your tomatoes.

9. Water the Tomato Plants Regularly.

Water deeply and regularly while the plants are developing. Irregular watering, (missing a week and trying to make up for it), leads to blossom end rot and cracking. The rule of thumb is to ensure your plants get at least 1 in. of water per week, but during hot, dry spells, they may need more. If your plants start to look wilted for most of the day, give them a drink.

Once the fruit begins to ripen, you can ease up on watering. Lessening the water will coax the plant into concentrating its sugars, for better flavor. You your judgement. Don’t withhold water so much that the plants continually wilt and become stressed or they will drop their blossoms and possibly their fruit.

10. Getting Them to Set Tomatoes

A lot of vegetable gardening is at the mercy of the weather, but sometimes we can help things along. There are two types of tomato plants. Determinate tomatoes reach a certain height and then set and ripen their fruit all at one time, making a large quantity available when you’re ready to make sauce. These tend to start flowering fairly early in the season and shouldn't be a problem getting them to set fruit, unless weather conditions are unfavorable and cause a condition aptly named "blossom drop".

Those big, juicy beefsteak tomatoes we all crave grow on indeterminate plants. By indeterminate, they mean the plants just keep growing. Tomatoes are vines, after all, and indeterminate tomatoes reach for the sun. They like to grow tall before they start setting fruits. If you're impatient, pinching off the tips of the main stems in early summer will encourage them to start putting their energy into flowering. This is also a handy trick toward the end of the summer, when you want the last tomatoes to hurry up and ripen.

A empresa confirma ter demitido funcionários da divisão que produz o dispositivo, mas nega que isso represente o fim do dispositivo digital

Enquanto um grande número de empresas corre para ocupar um lugar no mercado de computação vestível, um dos grandes players do mercado esportivo parece ter pulado fora da corrida.

Nesta sexta-feira, 18/04, o site Cnet divulgou que a Nike, fabricante da pulseira Nike+ FuelBand SE, estaria desistindo de fabricar o dispostivo e concentrando seus esforços na área de Digital Sports apenas em software.  Segundo o artigo, a Nike demitiu 55 dos 70 funcionários da divisão responsável pela pulseira de rastreamento de atividades físicas.

A empresa, no entanto, disse ao site TNW, por email, que a “Nike+ FuelBand SE continua sendo uma parte importante dos negócios".  O texto do email enfatiza a parceria com a Apple existente desde 2006, destaca o lançamento recente do Nike+ Fuel Lab e reafirma o compromisso da companhia com a continuidade da estratégia Nike+ e NikeFuel (a métrica de performance dos usuários) o site, e as apps de acompanhamento de atividade física, o que absolutamente não quer dizer hardware próprio.

A FuelBand é uma pulseira de borracha que rastreia os movimentos do seu usuário por meio de um acelerômetro embutido. O dispositivo wireless envia os dados para um app de iPhone ou iPod que converte as informações em pontos NikeFuel analisando a performance física do usuário e ajudando-o a definir metas diárias de exercício. Os dados também podem ser compartilhados online e comparados com outros usuários.

Vendida ao preço de US$ 149, a FuelBand ganhou uma nova versão em outubro de 2013 e teria uma versão mais fina programada para ser lançada este ano. A pulseira continua a ser vendida na loja online da Nike.

Uma das especulações levantadas pela Cnet é a de que a Nike está deixando o terreno livre para o dispositivo de computação vestível que a Apple se prepara para lançar. O movimento de se concentrar no software levaria a Nike a fazer par com a Apple nesse terreno - especialmente se levarmos em conta que o CEO da Apple, Tim Cook, tem um assento no conselho de diretores da Nike.

O email da Nike não ajuda muito a esclarecer a questão, uma vez que não nega a descontinuidade do dispositivo mas apenas diz que a Nike "continuará a aperfeiçoar a Nike+ FuelBand App, lançará novas cores METALUXE e vai vender e dar suporte à Nike+ FuelBand SE no futuro visível.”

Facebook traz de volta polêmica função que mostra localização de amigos

 

O Facebook anunciou o lançamento de "Nearby Friends", nesta quinta-feira (17), uma nova função para indicar quais amigos da rede social estão próximos de você. O recurso será opcional, podendo ser ligado e desligado quando o usuário desejar, e começará a funcionar nos Estados Unidos, em dispositivos Android e iOS. No entanto, o que pouco tem sido comentado é que a aplicação não é uma proposta tão recente assim, e teria sido inclusive alvo de polêmicas no passado.

Em 2012, a rede social anunciou um recurso chamado "Find Friends", algo que pode ser traduzido como "Encontre amigos". Como pode ser visto nesta matéria do TechTudo, a função usava o GPS do smartphone para indicar uma lista de contatos que estivessem próximos naquele momento. A aplicação chegou a funcionar em dispositivos Android e iOS, mas logo foi retirada do ar.

O motivo da retirada foi a polêmica que se criou ao redor do "Find Friends", quando o CEO da empresa "FindThem", Charles Sankowich, foi à imprensa denunciar que a rede social de Zuckerberg estaria copiando um produto criado por sua companhia. O CEO afirmou que não desistiria da ideia de entrar com uma ação contra o Facebook por “roubo de marca registrada”.

Sankowich, de fato, acionou a justiça para tomar providências com relação ao possível plágio, e, dias após a chegada de "Find Friends" no aplicativo móvel do Facebook, a função foi desativada. À época, a assessoria da rede social de Mark Zuckerberg decidiu não comentar a decisão, mas, em um comunicado anterior, a empresa afirmou que aquela “não era uma liberação formal do recurso, e sim alguns engenheiros testando o novo produto”.

Dois anos após toda a polêmica, o Facebook vem a público relançar com nome novo, e layout bem melhorado, a mesma função de geolocalização de amigos no smartphone. O recurso ainda não tem data para chegar ao Brasil, mas usuários dos Estados Unidos já poderão usufruir da aplicação nas próximas semanas.

Pronto. Com esse procedimento, você já pode começar sua conta Google no Windows 8, vendo seus e-mail e contatos. Você não poderá mais sincronizar seu calendário do Google com o aplicativo Calendário, mas poderá ver seus eventos, movendo-os para o Outlook.com. Para isso, será necessário exportá-lo e, depois, importar o arquivo ICS Google para o Calendário do Outlook no seu computador.

From radiolaria to each unique snowflake, pattern is the language of nature. Human-made artifacts expressing these natural occurrences can be riveting, like this collection of embroidered spheres made by an 88-year-old Japanese grandmother, who started crafting these in her sixties.

 

 

Flickr user NanaAkua took a visual record of almost 500 of these balls made by her granny, and posted them up for all to see.

The technique originated from China before being exported to Japan in the seventh century, and temari is the Japanese term for this fascinating form of folk art. Says This Is Colossal:

The carefully hand-embroidered balls often made from the thread of old kimonos were created by parents or grandparents and given to children on New Year’s day as special gift. According to Wikipedia the balls would sometimes contain secret handwritten wish for the child, or else contained some kind of noise-making object like a bell.

A linha SLT da Sony chegou para redefinir a real superioridade das chamadas DSLR, que captam a luz exclusivamente por meio de lentes para mirar, tornando a captura pelo sensor mais realística. Com essa tecnologia, a Sony SLT-A37K é o modelo mais básico disponível no Brasil.

Equipada com configuração robusta que permite, por exemplo, trocar lentes e fazer fotos panorâmicas em 3D, a SLT-A37K também conta com um sensor de 16.1 megapixels com disparo contínuo de sete quadros por segundo, além de gravar vídeos em Full HD. A visualização fica por conta de uma tela LCD de três polegadas.

O modelo pode ser encontrado no e-commerce brasileiro por cerca de R$ 1.700.

SLT-A58

Imediatamente superior à A37, a próxima da lista é a SLT-A58, que traz um sensor que captura imagens maiores, de até 20.1 megapixels. O sensor CMOS trabalha junto com o processador de imagem BIONZ, que ajusta automaticamente os níveis de ruído e nitidez em diferentes áreas da imagem. Além disso, o ISO até 16.000 é considerado bom para essa classe de equipamento.

A SLT-A58 ainda filma em 1080p com áudio estéreo e captura oito fotos por segundo no modo contínuo. Completam suas especificações um estabilizador óptico de imagem; gravação em RAW e um display OLED de 2,7 polegadas com resolução de 800×600 pixels.

A câmera pode ser adquirida no Brasil por preços que variam entre R$ 2.500 e R$ 2.800.

Topo de linha da Sony no Brasil entre os modelos SLT – à exceção da full frame SLT-A99 – a SLT-A77 conta com configurações dignas de câmeras profissionais, apesar de não custar caro como uma. Destinada a um público amador, porém exigente, essa câmera vem com um sensor de 24 Megapixels e capaz de tirar até 12 fotos por segundo. Também há um modo de redução de ruído em que a câmera tira várias fotos e as funde em um único arquivo, permitindo gravar com ISO acima do teto de 16.000.

Devido à alta resolução, a SLT-A77 também suporta dois modos de captura: o Smart Teleconverter, que fotografa com um crop de 1,4 x a 12 megapixels, ou com 2,0 x de crop com resolução de 6 megapixels. Ela ainda grava em FullHD a 50 fps e tem microfone estéreo embutido. Como destaque, ainda há antena GPS para aplicar geotag nas imagens.

Para ter tudo isso, o consumidor brasileiro terá que desembolsar R$ 3.500 ou mais – embora seja um valor alto, não chega perto do cobrado por câmeras profissionais de desempenho geral bastante similar.

 

Nokia deve lançar Asha 230 e Nokia 220, com super bateria, no Brasil

 

Os novos smartphones da Nokia, o Asha 230 e o Nokia 220, já foram homologados pela Anatel e em breve devem estar nas lojas do Brasil. Os modelos, apresentados na conferência MWC, em fevereiro deste ano, impressionam pela autonomia da bateria. Em stand-by, a empresa garante que o Nokia 220 fica ligado até 29 dias ou 51 horas de uso contínuo, sem precisar de recarga. Já o Asha 230, são 40 horas de uso ininterrupto.

Voltado para o mercado emergente, o Nokia 220 possui o modelo de teclado antigo, como nos celulares comuns. O aparelho permite acesso ao Facebook e Twitter, reprodução de mp3, Rádio Fm, além de alguns jogos pré instalados, como o Modern Combat 2, da Gameloft. O aparelho vem com tela colorida de 2,4 polegadas, capacidade de armazenamento de até 32 GB por cartão microSD e câmera de 2 megapixels. O smartphone possui Bluetooth 2.1 e conexão 2G, além de lanterna e um aplicativo que sincroniza sem fio fotos e vídeos

O aparelho também possui uma opção com dual-SIM e será comercializado nas cores cores amarela, branca, ciano, preta e vermelha. O preço sugerido nos Estados Unidos é de US$ 39, aproximadamente R$ 90.

Um pouco mais robusto, o modelo Asha 230 também deverá ser lançado por aqui. Com tela touchscreen de 2,8 polegadas, o aparelho vem com diversos jogos e aplicativos instalados de fábrica, como o WhatsApp e o Line. A câmera, com apenas 1.3 megapixels não é a das melhores, mas o novo navegador Nokia Xpress Browser, que funciona na nuvem, promete otimizar a navegação na internet.

Assim como o modelo 220, o Asha 230 também virá em diversas cores e terá uma versão que comporta dois chips de forma simultânea.  O preço sugerido nos Estados Unidos é de US$ 59, aproximadamente R$ 130.
