Alzheimer's prevention: Does it exist?

 

 

Are there any proven Alzheimer's prevention strategies?

According to a statement from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a number of factors could play a role in whether you develop Alzheimer's disease. However, more research is needed before modification of any of these factors can be proved to prevent Alzheimer's disease.

The NIH report was developed by an independent panel of health professionals and public representatives who reviewed the most current research on Alzheimer's prevention. The panel found that studies to date have varied too much in size, scope, criteria and definitions to compare results and draw reliable conclusions.

Although more research is needed to definitively prove which Alzheimer's prevention strategies are effective, some possible strategies that promote good overall health include:

  • Avoiding smoking
  • Eating a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits and lean protein, particularly protein sources containing omega-3 fatty acids
  • Being physically and socially active
  • Taking care of your mental health
  • Using thinking (cognitive) skills, such as memory skills

How Alzheimer's blood test could be first step in developing treatments to halt or slow disease

A blood test has the potential to predict Alzheimer’s disease before patients start showing symptoms, researchers have reported. Now they expand upon this groundbreaking research and discuss why it could be the key to curing this devastating illness. "This discovery is a potentially enormous breakthrough in the fight against Alzheimer's," said an expert. "If research aimed at a cure for Alzheimer's is to move forward, it is crucial that Alzheimer's clinical trials find a way to recruit patients who are still asymptomatic, since they are the ones most likely to respond to treatment."


In March of this year, a team of Georgetown University scientists published research showing that, for the first time ever, a blood test has the potential to predict Alzheimer's disease before patients start showing symptoms. AACC is pleased to announce that a late-breaking session at the 2014 AACC Annual Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo in Chicago will expand upon this groundbreaking research and discuss why it could be the key to curing this devastating illness.

According to the World Health Organization, the number of Alzheimer's patients worldwide is expected to skyrocket from the 35.6 million individuals who lived with it in 2010 to 115.4 million by 2050. Currently, however, all efforts to cure or effectively treat the disease have failed. Experts believe one explanation for this lack of success could be that the window of opportunity for treating Alzheimer's has already closed by the time its symptoms manifest.

Enter the research team led by Howard Federoff, MD, PhD, executive dean at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. In cognitively healthy adults age 70 and older, Federoff's team measured the levels of 10 lipids found in the blood to identify, with 90% accuracy, which study group participants would develop cognitive impairment over a 2-3 year period. If this 10-lipid test is validated in larger studies, it could help researchers to develop treatments for Alzheimer's that halt or slow the disease before it even begins. A blood test would also be easier to perform than current Alzheimer's tests that use brain imaging or hard-to-collect cerebrospinal fluid, meaning that the Federoff team's test could be used for population-wide Alzheimer's screening.

Amrita Cheema, PhD, one of the main investigators on Federoff's team, will give an in-depth lecture on the test's significance, the science behind it, and the research techniques used to develop it in the July 28 AACC session, "Lipidomics: A Powerful Approach to Identify Pre-clinical Memory Impairment in Older Adults." Cheema is an associate professor and co-director of the Proteomics and Metabolomics Shared Resource at Georgetown University.

"This discovery is a potentially enormous breakthrough in the fight against Alzheimer's," said AACC CEO Janet B. Kreizman. "If research aimed at a cure for Alzheimer's is to move forward, it is crucial that Alzheimer's clinical trials find a way to recruit patients who are still asymptomatic, since they are the ones most likely to respond to treatment. The Federoff team's test could be the answer to this problem, and it also demonstrates how laboratory medicine helps patients achieve better health -- by not only ensuring that patients receive timely and appropriate treatment, but also by enabling researchers to develop effective treatments in the first place."

Coffee, Tea Fight Alzheimer's: Researchers

 

Coffee or tea? The answer may be both, if you're looking to preserve your memory and potentially ward off Alzheimer's disease, according to a pair of new studies.

According to new research published online in the journal Neurobiology of Aging, a team of French and German researchers found the caffeine in coffee has a positive effect on particular protein deposits in the brain linked to Alzheimer's, reducing the risk of memory loss and other cognitive impairments.

Meanwhile, a second study published in the journal Psychopharmacology by Swiss researchers at the University of Basel, found that a green tea extract enhances working memory and other cognitive functions that decline in dementia patients, suggesting it may have promising clinical implications for the treatment of Alzheimer's patients.
"We have taken a good step forward," said Christa E. Müller, from the University of Bonn, who helped lead the caffeine study, which involved laboratory animals. "The results of the study are truly promising."

Dr. Müller's research suggests caffeine may block the formation of so-called tau deposits in the brain which, along with beta-amyloid plaques, are among the characteristic features of Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Müller suggested the work could pave the way for a new class of drugs to treat Alzheimer's.

The second study found that green tea extract increases the brain's effective "connectivity" — the causal influence that one brain area exerts over another — leading to improvements in cognitive performance, memory among a group of men who consumed tea before solving working memory tasks.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the men's brains showed increased connectivity between the parietal and the frontal cortex of the brain — tied to memory and learning — after drinking green tea.

3 Simple Ways to Prevent Alzheimer's

 

Georgetown University researchers reported making great strides this month toward developing a blood test for Alzheimer's disease. But until such a test is widely available, one of the nation's leading experts on aging and mental health says there are steps you can — and should — take now to reduce your odds of developing dementia.

Gary Small, M.D., director of the UCLA Longevity Center, tells Newsmax TV it could take years for the breakthrough Georgetown research to translate into a viable Alzheimer’s blood test to diagnose the condition early, when drugs that slow its progression are most effective. But, in the meantime, Dr. Small recommends three simple but effective ways to protect the brain from the ravages of the memory-robbing disease: Exercising, managing stress, and eating a healthy diet.

"The research is compelling that there's a lot we can do to protect our brain health," says Dr. Small, a professor of psychiatry and aging, and the author of The Mind Health Report. "The MacArthur Study of Successful Aging concluded that about a third of what determines Alzheimer's disease or cognitive decline as we age comes from genetics. That means that two-thirds is non-genetic and may be under our control."

Dr. Small, author of "The Memory Prescription: Dr. Gary Small's 14-Day Plan to Keep Your Brain and Body Young," recommends being on the lookout for early signs of cognitive declines, including even minor memory lapses, if they occur frequently or become increasingly more pronounced and serious. Occasionally forgetting where you left your car keys may not be a sign of trouble, for instance, but forgetting a spouse's name or how to drive to a favorite restaurant could be a symptom of dementia.

"It's difficult because those 'senior moments' [can] gradually segue into mild Alzheimer's disease," he explains. "So it's often difficult to differentiate them from normal … aging or incipient Alzheimer's. If you're concerned, it's always best to check with your doctor early rather than late because the sooner you can make a diagnosis and initiate treatment, the better will be the outcome."

He adds that the Georgetown researchers' progress toward developing a blood test for Alzheimer's is "promising," but more work will be needed to verify their findings and market such a test. The team found that levels of 10 fats ("lipids") in the bloodstream can be used to estimate the chances of someone developing mild cognitive impairment — which involves memory loss and a decline in thinking ability — or the beginnings of Alzheimer's disease within a few years.

Lead researcher Howard Federoff, executive dean of the Georgetown University School of Medicine, said those 10 blood fats can predict impending dementia with 90 percent accuracy, even before symptoms appear. Doctors now must rely on expensive MRIs and PET scans that are limited in their diagnostic ability, so a blood test based on the research would be a significant step forward, and allow doctors to begin therapies early — when they are most effective — before significant brain damage and memory loss occur.

Alzheimer's afflicts more than 5 million Americans and kills at least 84,000 people in the U.S. every year. 

Until such a test is available, Dr. Small recommends the following clinically proven ways to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's and slowing its progress.

1-Exercise at least 30 minutes each day. "I recommend that people get physical exercise routinely," he says. "We know that it pumps oxygen and nutrients to your brain cells and protects them, mental exercise also probably protects your brain and can improve those age-related memory slips." He adds that you don't have to become a triathlete or spend hours at the gym every day. "Just 20 minutes a day of brisk walking will lower your risk for Alzheimer's disease," he says. It's also a good idea to exercise the mind, by engaging in mentally stimulating activities that can keep you sharp as you age.

2-Learn to manage stress effectively. Meditation, yoga, listening to music, or simply spending a few minutes each day doing something to relax and wind down have been shown to ease stress and boost mental and physical health. "Trying to manage stress better is critically important," Dr. Small advises. "Stress is really the enemy of brain health."

3-Eat a healthy diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids. "Nutrition is critically important," he says, "In the average American diet, we're not getting enough omega-3 fats from fish, nuts, and flax seed. We're not getting enough fruits and vegetables that are [rich in] anti-oxidant[s] and protect brain cells."
