The Awesome DSLR Features You (Probably) Never Knew Existed

The Awesome DSLR Features You (Probably) Never Knew Existed

When compared to point-and-shoot cameras, DSLRs come with the promise of superior image quality and increased shooting flexibility. It’s much more than that, though: many upgrade and completely miss major benefits of using a high-end camera. If you’ve got a DSLR, make sure you know about these features before you take another photograph.

Note: This post discusses a variety of features, many of which fall into the intermediate or advanced category of DSLR user. If you haven’t learned the basics of your DSLR yet and need to familiarize yourself with the terminology, you should check out our Photography Night School course before diving into this article.

Program Mode

The Awesome DSLR Features You (Probably) Never Knew Existed

What is it?
If manual and automatic mode had a baby, you’d call it program mode. Like automatic shooting, program mode handles the exposure of the photograph for you. You won’t need to set your shutter speed, aperture, or ISO—
terms you should read up on if you’re unfamiliar with them—because the camera will do that for you to ensure you get an acceptably exposed image. While that may sound a lot like automatic shooting, you actually gain more creative control. Your flash won’t engage without your permission, you can set your ISO if you don’t want an automatic choice, you can choose a custom white balance setting, and tell the camera to over or underexpose the image a little bit when necessary.

For an in-depth look at what program mode can do, check out our guide.

What DSLRs have it?
Every DSLR offers program mode.

How can I use it?
Turn the dial (or virtual dial) on your DSLR to the letter P. Some may use a symbol or different marking, but in most cases P represents program mode. From there you can adjust any of the settings mentioned above just as you would in manual mode.

Custom Functions

The Awesome DSLR Features You (Probably) Never Knew Existed

What is it?
You can think of custom functions as shortcuts for your DSLR. You can literally change a bunch of settings in an instant with just a turn of your mode dial. You can quickly set aperture, exposure, ISO, the noise reduction mode, color settings, and much more. This feature prevents you from manually changing your settings over and over again. Instead, you just tell the camera what settings you want and it’ll recall them any time you switch to one of the custom function modes.

What DSLRs have it?
We’re talking solely about Canon DSLRs here, but other manufacturers may offer a similar feature.

The Awesome DSLR Features You (Probably) Never Knew Existed

How can I use it?
Newer Canon cameras store the custom function settings under the menu section that looks like a little orange camera or yellow wrench (usually towards the end of your choices). Others may keep it elsewhere. Either way, find it in your menu and you’ll have three custom function options called C1, C2, and C3. Each of these options corresponds to a similarly named label on your DSLR’s mode dial. Select the one you want to set from the menu, then choose the settings you want to recall when you choose that custom function mode. When finished, you can turn your camera’s mode dial to C1, C2, or C3 and recall the settings instantly. For more information,
consult Canon’s official guide.

Depth of Field Preview

The Awesome DSLR Features You (Probably) Never Knew Existed

What is it?
When you look through the viewfinder of your camera, you see an approximate frame of what you’re shooting but not necessarily what the photo will look like. Because a lot of choices and settings affect depth of field—which
you should read up on if not familiar with the term—and your DSLR doesn’t apply all of those settings until you snap a photo, what you see through the viewfinder isn’t always what you get. Although this may seem weird, if you have a shallow depth of field (meaning only a small part of the image remains in focus) you might find it difficult to compose an image. That said, you’ll often want to know what you’ll get before you press the shutter. The Depth-of-Field Preview gives you a—you guessed it!—preview so you can see what you’ll get through the viewfinder.

What DSLRs have it?
Most DSLRs have a Depth of Field Preview button. Most people forget it exists because manufacturers tend to hide the button on the front of the camera.

How can I use it?
You press the button—after you manage to find it. Most cameras hide the Depth of Field Preview button on the front of the camera near the lens. Because you’ll need your right hand to press the shutter, you’ll likely find that button to the left of the lens. Again, just press it and it’ll do its job.

Picture Styles

The Awesome DSLR Features You (Probably) Never Knew Existed

What Are They?
By now you must know
Instagram and all its fancy filters. DSLRs, despite their more professional look, decided to cash in on this trend. In some ways it seems kind of silly to have old-school filters on a camera designed to take high-quality photographs, but sometimes these colors adjustments make a great impact. You’ll want to use them sparingly, but you should still consider Picture Styles. At the very least, subtle options like monotone and faded color can produce stunning images under the right circumstances.

What DSLRs have it?
Most popular DSLRs released in the last few years have picture styles, including smaller mirrorless cameras. While you might find this feature under a variety of names, you shouldn’t have much trouble locating it. Even if you have an older camera, you probably have access to a few styles anyway. They not offer the variety of Instagram, but something is better than nothing.

How do I use it?
To use Picture Styles (or whatever your camera calls it), you just need to turn it on and select the style you want. Where you’ll find this option not only depends on your camera’s manufacturer, but often on the camera model as well. Newer DSLRs may have a dedicated button while others require you to go into their menu system to make the change. Either way, you’ll find this feature fast if you look it up in your manual. If you have an older model, look for information on how to shoot in black and white and you should find you various color options. In some cases, your camera may even let you program your own.

Back Button Focus

The Awesome DSLR Features You (Probably) Never Knew Existed

What is it?
You already know that your DSLR engages its autofocus mechanism if you hold its shutter halfway. Most of the time you won’t want to focus any other way, but certain circumstances call for a different method. Back Button Focus allows you to press a button on the back of your camera to engage autofocus and use the shutter only for snapping a picture.

Why would you want this? It prevents your camera from refocusing every time you press the shutter which can save you a lot of trouble if you want to maintain the same focal point. Sometimes people can step in front of your images when you shoot quickly and confuse the camera’s autofocus. This can cause you to miss a shot. On the other side, when shooting in a studio you may only need to focus once but recompose your shot. If you don’t want to engage autofocus every time, this can help. Of course, you can just turn off autofocus or hold down your AE lock button to solve this problem another way, but Back Button Focus gives you a hybrid of both. You get autofocus only when you want it, and—presuming your lens supports it—manual focus and a dedicated shutter button the rest of the time.

What DSLRs have it?
Pretty much every Canon DSLR offers this feature because Canon created the feature. Most Nikon DSLRs allow you to enable the same functionality in a somewhat tedious manner. Other manufacturers may include it but not on every camera. Canon cameras often have a dedicated button. Others require you to set an existing (custom function) button for the feature.

How can I use it?
Whether your DSLR offers a dedicated button or requires you to set one yourself, you’ll need to turn on Back Button Focus on most DSLRs. Canon’s Learning Center
offers up a cheat sheet of where you can find this feature on many of their popular DSLRs:

EOS Rebel T3: C.Fn 7 (option 1 or 3)

EOS Rebel T3i: C.Fn 9 (option 1 or 3)

EOS Rebel T4i: C.Fn 6 (option 1 or 3)

EOS 60D: C.Fn IV-1 (option 1, 2, 3, or 4)

EOS 7D: C.Fn IV-1 (Custom Controls — Shutter, AF-ON, AEL buttons)

EOS 6D: C.Fn III-5 (Custom Controls — Shutter, AF-ON, AEL buttons)

EOS 5D Mark II: C.Fn IV-1 (option 2 or 3)

EOS 5D Mark III: C.Fn menu screen 2 (Custom Controls — Shutter, AF-ON, AEL buttons)

EOS-1D X: C.Fn menu screen 5 (Custom Controls — Shutter, AF-ON, AEL buttons)

Nikon users should read these instructions, as the process requires some setup rather than just flipping a switch in the DSLR’s settings. Other cameras get pretty specific, so consult your manual for setup information. If you can’t find anything there, a quick web search for “back button focus” plus the name of your camera model should turn up the information you need.

Custom Firmware

The Awesome DSLR Features You (Probably) Never Knew Existed

What is it?
Custom firmware adds features to your DSLR that the manufacturer didn’t add themselves. Most of the time you buy a camera that can do quite a bit more than it lets on. You can unlock that functionality with custom firmware. The downside? Installation may void your warranty.

What DSLRs have it?
Several popular DSLRs from Canon, Nikon, and Panasonic have custom firmware. To find out if your camera has some, check out
DIY Photography’s excellent roundup of options.

How can I use it?
How you install custom firmware depends on your DSLR. In most cases, you just load it up like you would an official firmware update. Sometimes this will overwrite existing firmware, but some options (like Magic Lantern, primarily for Canon cameras) only loads itself temporarily (safer but less convenient). Either way, when using custom firmware you run the risk of voiding your warranty and potentially screwing up your camera. Make sure your camera supports the firmware you try to install and that you follow the instructions carefully.

This post covers a variety of cool features most people don’t know about in their DSLRs, but you’ll find many more if you start digging. If you really want to get the most out of your camera, search for something new that you didn’t know about and learn how it works. Your DSLR’s manual covers every little minute detail of its operation, so you have an entire menu of options. You don’t want to end up with a glorified point-and-shoot. Your DSLR offers tons of features, but you can’t use them if you don’t know they exist.

42 Secrets to Living a Full, Happy Life

Life is a game we all play, some better than others. There are secrets to life that are kept under wraps, but most of what you need to know is readily available if you seek it out. Here are 42 simple secrets to a happy and fun life!

Here are the (not so secret) secrets of living a full, rewarding & happy life.

Photo: Sergey Galyonkin

1. Laugh and smile. Laughter and smiles are scientifically proven to have health benefits. Don’t just wait around for things that will make you laugh and smile, seek them out. Rent comedy movies or go to a comedy club. Smile as often as you can, even if you’re not in the mood.

2. Go and smell the roses. These days the slogan has changed to go and smell the roses. This is because people as a whole are getting out and about less and less thanks to modern creature comforts. Plan a trip and go somewhere new to you at least quarterly.

3. Test your own limits. If there’s anyone that knows your limits, it’s you. But how well do you know them? You may think you know your limits but if you’re not actively testing them it could just be something you thought up and it became your self-imposed limit.

4. Rage against complacency. It’s so easy to get complacent, because the known feels so warm and fuzzy, while the unknown can seem like a faceless monster. Always strive to grow and improve yourself, because if you’re not growing, you’re dying, just like a flower, there’s no in between.

5. Never stop learning. Even if you’re done with formal schooling and training you don’t have to hang up the noggin and call it a day. Keep pushing yourself to learn new things, whether it’s a skill like cooking or a musical instrument, or becoming an expert of a particular time period.

6. Keep your legacy in mind. Leaving a legacy is something we all do, it just depends on the size and scale of it. What will yours be? What do you want it to be? Take a long view of your life as a whole and decide on steps today that will help get you there.

7. Don’t watch the news. When is the last time you watched the news or read the paper and felt better afterward? Trust that the most important news will find its way to you, and you’ll help avoid the barrage of negative and fear-mongering stories presented each day by the big media outlets.

8. Take a daily walk outside. Get outside each day, even if the season doesn’t make it enticing. You’ll be getting fresh air, sunshine, and natural motion that the body secretly craves. Make it a mission and it will become a habit you do without even thinking about it.

family time

9. Make time for the people you love. Taking time from your day to spend with the people that truly mean the most to you is never wasted time. The same cannot be said for mindless things like TV watching, Facebook checking, Tweeting, etc.

10. Stamp out regrets. There’s no point in regretting things that have already happened, you were just doing the best you could with the information you had at the time. Make it your mission to live in the present and live in a way that leaves you regret-free.

11. Take steps to get organized. If your home, car, and office are a disorganized mess this represents blocked energy. Free up that energy by giving these places a makeover. You’ll be amazed how great you feel when it’s all neat and tidy.

12. Get regular sunshine. Vitamin D is the “sunshine vitamin” but it’s actually a hormone that helps regulate many key systems in the body. If you want to feel your best be sure you’re not Vitamin D deficient. Get sunshine without sunblock and without burning to get your body to produce enough.

13. Celebrate often. Get in the habit of buying a bottle of champagne. Celebrate successes in your life, even if they don’t seem big enough to celebrate. The more you’re in the mentality of celebration the more things will come your way that give you reason to celebrate.

14. Take care of your body. When your body feels good you can’t help but feel good, so take time each day to do something good for your body. The rewards come both in the present as well as the future in the form of living to a ripe old age.

15. Get a clear vision of what you want. In order to have a full and happy life you have to know what you want. How else will you know if you have it unless you know what it looks like. Keep that picture in your mind as often as you can and it will be drawn to you like a magnet.

16. Master a second language (or third). Being able to express yourself in a second language is very rewarding, and helps to keep the brain sharp. If you’ve already become fluent in a second language, consider adding a third.

17. Validate others. Let people know just how much they mean to you. You may feel a bit cheesy at first if this is foreign to you, but it gets easier the more you do it. Don’t wait for someone to validate you, or expect them to validate you back. Give validation just for the sake of doing it.

18. Get paid to exist. There’s no harm in getting paid to do something you’re good at, and if you have a skill or talent that you’ve been honing for a lifetime, you can get paid for it and combine your passion with your need to survive and thrive.

Go to Exciting Events

Photo: Sergey Galyonkin

19. Go to exciting events. Always have something on the horizon that you’re looking forward to. It doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate, even a musical concert of a band you like will get your juices flowing and get you counting down the days like a kid at Christmas.

20. Trace your family history. Knowing where you’ve come from is important and will help you figure out where you want to go. Seeing your family tree mapped out before you gives you a sense that you didn’t just end up where you are, there is a long line of ancestors that helped get you here.

21. Get a magnificent obsession. Find something that you can get totally head-over-heels in love with, either a business idea, a hobby, or a dream of yours. Spend all of your time thinking about it and feeling good while you think about it and eventually it will come to fruition. Obsession can be a good thing when it’s a positive one that will move your life forward.

22. Unplug. It’s getting harder and harder to separate from our smartphones and other digital assistants, but it’s a necessity if you want a truly fulfilling life. Take time from each day with the WiFi turned off. Build up to taking an entire day off free from constant updates and social media check-ins.

23. Always have a goal to strive for. The one thing they don’t tell you in goal books is what to do when you reach that goal. The answer is to come up with a new goal and start going for that. Don’t rest on your laurels, get out there and go for something even bigger than what you’ve already accomplished.

24. Don’t sweat the small stuff. And remember, it’s all small stuff. When you focus on the things that really matter, the small stuff either goes away or works itself out without your involvement. If you’re stressed out and feeling blue ask yourself if this is something to really worry about, or is it just small stuff. Chances are, it’s small stuff masquerading as big stuff.

25. Remember the Golden Rule. Regardless of your religion or creed, we can all agree that the Golden Rule is a darn fine rule indeed. Treat others the way you’d like to be treated. If we all did that, it would be a truly remarkable world to live in, wouldn’t it? Fortunately the rest of the world doesn’t have to get on board with it for you to enjoy the benefits.

26. Love what you do. You’ve likely heard the adage “Do what you love.” but that can sometimes be hard to do since you have to make a living. Start by loving what you’re currently doing, and those good vibrations will eventually translate to you doing what you love.

27. Paint. This is a therapeutic activity that just about anyone can take part in. It will relax you, allow you to tap into your creative side, and if you’re good at it can even lead to some earnings. Pick a style of painting, or try out a few different ones until you find one that resonates with you.

Connect with Nature

Photo: Tomas Sobek

28. Get in touch with nature often. Nature is there, just waiting for you to check in. Even if you have to drive a bit to get there, it’s worth the trip. A walk through a wooded area is enough to give you a feeling that all is well, especially if you spot some wildlife just going about life in the wild.

29. Give hugs. If you’re not getting enough hugs it likely means you’re not giving enough hugs. Never pass up the opportunity to hug someone. Start with your immediate family and then see if you can work it into friends, and then acquaintances, if appropriate. An awkward hug is better than no hug at all.

30. Focus on freedom. When freedom is your focus you’ll be tapping into the core of the human spirit. We all want to be free, free to travel, to get what we want, and to be with who we love. Accentuate the feeling of freedom and you’ll find that many more doors open, furthering that feeling and improving your life.

31. Succumb to the kid inside you. Eat an ice cream cone, play in the sprinklers, go down a slide at the park. That little voice inside you has been beckoning, and if you’re like most adults you reject it all too often. Be sure to budget in some childhood nostalgia on a regular basis.

32. Build your dreams. Dreams constantly change and are at risk of shrinking. Your dreams need to grow to fit your current desires, and they may need an upgrade. To build your dreams, consider the things you might want to have or experience if money was no object. This expands your mind and opens it to the possibility that you could get those things at some point.

33. Surprise someone regularly. If you can’t remember the last time you surprised someone, you aren’t surprising people often enough. These are good surprises, like flowers or small gifts, or maybe even a phone call. Anything that lets them know you’re thinking about them, and that shakes up the status quo.

34. Harness the power of music. Use music to boost your current good mood, or to help elevate your mood if you’re in a funk. This is something that should be done daily, and if you’re not using the powerful effects of music, you’re missing out on tool that can help you live a happier life.

35. Worry less, like, not at all. Worrying is negative goal setting, and it’s a form of picturing in your mind what you don’t want to happen. Einstein said the imagination is a preview of life’s coming attractions, so stop setting yourself up for disaster and despair by worrying.

36. Let the universe decide for you. You may think you know exactly what will make you happy, but the universe may have other, better plans for you. Stop trying to control everything and judge your happiness by your feelings, not your thoughts. Always seek out the best feeling and the details will fall into place. They always do.

37. Train your dragon. Your “dragon” is that special power that you possess, the part inside you that you’re afraid to let loose. To train it means to harness this gift and put it to work for you, rather than keeping it locked up in its lair.

38. Get a mentor. A mentor is someone that has what you want and is willing to tell you how they did it. It helps if they’ve already been where you currently are, so they can give the best, most relevant advice. It can be someone you know personally, a paid life coach, or a celebrity whose life you can model.

Dance

Photo: Vladimir Pustovit

39. Dance. Even if no one is watching, if you’re alone in your living room, just get down with your bad self. Dancing gets the whole body into the act, and simply makes you feel good. Dance off stress or dance to express the way you feel, just get moving!

40. Save money. Saving a bit of what you earn can pay huge dividends, not just monetarily but in the way you feel. Take 10% of what you make and tuck it away in a savings account. Don’t call it a “rainy day fund” or it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

41. Move daily. It’s getting harder and harder to get moving in our modern society. What once was a necessity of life is now viewed as a luxury or a chore. Take time to make sure that you’re getting daily motion, whether it’s a walk, a hobby, or other enjoyable activity.

42. Read. Don’t let this list be the last thing you read on how to better your life. There are so many books dedicated to getting more and more out of life, and reading and re-reading just a bit of them each day can help you stay focused on having a magical life.

They’re called OPCs for short, and they are particularly helpful in battling both types of oxidants, both water-soluble and fat-soluble. Most vitamins out there are only effective at defending one or the other. This gives free radicals a sort of double whammy and therefore does the body twice as good. Anti-Aging Key: Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs)

15. Watermelon
Watermelon tastes so good it’s easy to forget that it’s also good for you. Packed with vitamins and antioxidants, one in particular makes watermelon so effective at turning back the clock, and that is citrulline. It has detoxifying effects, boosts the immune system, helps with your metabolism, and helps keep your body balanced in key areas like your acid levels. Watermelon ranks on many healthy food lists, from being a top metabolism-enhancing food, to being a food that gives you energy. Anti-Aging Key: Citrulline

tomatoes

16. Tomatoes
The general rule of thumb is to eat more tomatoes, that’s just how good for you they are. Be sure to cook your tomatoes to unlock the most lycopene per bite, or go with sundried tomatoes if you want to get the biggest dose. Lycopene has been shown to help keep your heart healthy, and can also keep cancer at bay. In the world of antioxidants its considered king, so it’s really important to eat more cooked tomatoes regularly. Anti-Aging Key: Lycopene

17. Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts are in the same family as broccoli, cabbage, and kale, and provide many of the same benefits. They’re
high in Vitamin C, so rather than take a multivitamin or a Vitamin C supplement, try getting your daily needs met by the foods you eat. A serving of Brussels sprouts gets you a whole day’s worth of this powerful antioxidant that keeps your immune system strong. Anti-Aging Key: Vitamin C

18. Honey
The glucose oxidase found in honey has been shown to help clear out harmful bacteria in the body, bump up your immune system, and make you cleaner inside in general. Be sure to use raw honey rather than the processed kind most widely available. This will insure that you’re getting all of the benefits that honey can provide, and nothing has been stripped away during processing. Anti-Aging Key: Glucose Oxidase

19. Bananas
Bananas are a great fruit to enjoy whenever the mood strikes, since they’re super portable and come in their own packaging. They have plenty of potassium of course, but it also contains other minerals like magnesium, and vitamins like Vitamin C and Vitamin B-6. It’s great to eat foods like this that have a broad spectrum of nutrients that your body can use to keep all of its systems functioning at full power. Anti-Aging Key: Assortment of Vitamins and MInerals

20. Spinach
Spinach has plenty of good things going for it, fiber, protein, potassium, vitamins, and minerals, but the phytonutrients it provides are a big aid in keeping the body in tip-top condition. Fruits aren’t the only source of antioxidants, and certain vegetables contain plenty of them, spinach being one of them. Protecting your body from free radical damage is one of the top things you can do to delay the aging process. Anti-Aging Key: Polyphenols

almonds help you stay young

21. Almonds
Almonds make a hearty snack, and also provide you with plenty of benefits like polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, healthy fats the body needs daily. But it’s the Vitamin E that really makes almonds special. This will help keep your hair and skin looking younger, both of which often display key signs of getting older. For best results, eat raw almonds and not the dry roasted or salted varieties. Keeping a supply of almonds handy is a great idea, since a handful can hold you over until your next meal and helps you avoid junk food or fast food. Anti-Aging Key: Vitamin E

22. Salmon
The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon are an important anti-inflammatory agent for your body, and can help reduce the symptoms of any disease or condition caused or worsened by excessive inflammation. It’s also a good source of protein, so if you are doing any sort of resistance training it will help you build lean muscle which will keep your body looking and feeling better, and help keep you at a healthy weight. Anti-Aging Key: Omega-3s

23. Oysters
Oysters have the reputation for being an aphrodisiac, but they also contain minerals that are helpful in maintaining the health of some of your most important organs, your eyes. Getting proper amounts of selenium can also be useful in preventing certain types of cancer, and low levels have been linked to diseases. It’s better to get your selenium from natural sources like oysters, rather than from supplements. Anti-Aging Key: Zinc and Selenium
