In 2009, we had a look at the Wearable Artificial Kidney (WAK) concept that promised patients suffering from kidney failure an alternative to conventional dialysis. Now the tool-belt sized prototype has been granted approval for human testing in the United States by the FDA with clinical trials scheduled to take place in Seattle later this year.

The result of over a decade of development, the WAK was conceived by a team led by Victor Gura at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. It’s a miniature dialysis machine small enough to be worn like a tool belt and is connected to the patient by means of a catheter. According to the team, with such a device, patients would no longer be spending time in long, boring static sessions, but could be out and about working or playing while the wearable unit cleaned their blood on the go.

Like a conventional dialysis machine, the WAK filters out waste products from the patient’s blood after their own kidneys have failed. But while a conventional dialysis machine is the size of a filing cabinet, and even a portable version is as large as a computer printer, the WAK weighs only 10 lb (4.5 kg).

This is very important because dialysis takes up to four hours at a time, three times a week, during which the patient is attached to the machine. And because conventional and portable machines need to hooked to the mains and need large amounts of water, that means the patient can do little more than sit in a chair the entire time.

In terms of its design, WAK is almost identical to larger dialysis machines, but by taking advantage of recent advances in batteries, materials, and miniaturization, the WAK team has been able to radically reduce the size of the wearable machine and the amount of water needed from 40 gal (151 L) to a pint (0.5 L).

So far, the WAK device is at the prototype stage and has undergone limited human testing in Italy and the UK, and is one of three proposals out of 32 candidates chosen for the FDA’s Innovation Pathway program aimed at streamlining the development of medical products. The tests will involve up to 16 patients with 10 to be selected for the full trial. This will involve 24 -hour tests during which the patients will be allowed to move around. During this, blood samples will be drawn and there will be a 28-day follow-up observation period.

If the current test series proves successful, the team plans to work on a lighter and more streamlined version of the WAK. Future tests will aim at developing a method of slow, steady, round-the-clock dialysis to mimic the working of a normal kidney. According to the team, this would not only be a more natural routine, but would also free patients from some diet restrictions.

Researchers achieve long-distance light to matter quantum teleportation

A successful test in passing information from light into matter – using the teleportation of the quantum state of a photon via optical fiber cable to a receiving crystal located over 25 km (15 mi) away – has been claimed by physicists at the University of Geneva. This test shattered the same team’s previous record and may herald the development of greater, long-distance teleportation techniques and qubit communications and computing capabilities.

The experiment involved generating a quantum entanglement of two photons via a laser, then sending one of those entangled photons down an optical fiber whilst simultaneously sending the other to a crystal (composed of yttrium orthosilicate), where it was stored. A third photon was then sent to hit the first photon in the optical fiber, obliterating both itself and the first photon.

The researchers then used a device to measure the results of this collision and discovered that the quantum state information contained in the third photon was not actually destroyed, but had made its way into the crystal where the second entangled photon was contained.

In other words, the information contained in the third photon was transferred to the crystal, verifying that the quantum state of a photon can be preserved without the two photons needing to come into direct contact with each other. As such, the crystal acts as a memory store for the quantum information contained on the transmitted photon.

"The quantum state of the two elements of light, these two entangled photons which are like two Siamese twins, is a channel that empowers the teleportation from light into matter," said Dr. Felix Bussieres, senior researcher and lead author of the work.

This work is not the first time that the teleportation of quantum state information has been transmitted over a distance – the University of Geneva team itself conducted a similar successful experiment in 2003 over a distance of 6 km (3.7 mile), and scientists at TU Delft teleported qubit information between diamonds across the width of a room in another experiment. However, this long-range experiment not only exceeds the team's previous test distances, it is also the first successful mapping of energy–time entangled photons onto a quantum memory.

As a result of this research, possibilities may be opened up in the long-distance transmission of qubit information, which may lead to advances in the fields of quantum cryptography, quantum cloud computing, and of course, quantum teleportation.

The team's study is published in the journal Nature Photonics.

Os discos rígidos e a unidade de leitura ótica estão montados na posição horizontal, diferentemente dos que vi em vídeos no YouTube, onde esses hardwares estavam fixados com braçadeiras na posição vertical.

Researchers at the Salk Institute have discovered an on/off switch for telomerase, an enzyme that rebuilds a cellular timekeeper known as a telomere. The scientists believe that the discovery could provide a way to get human cells to divide indefinitely without degenerating, thereby regenerating healthy organs even in old age.

Telomeres, which can be likened to caps at the end of chromosomes that protect against deterioration, shorten as we age. Once they are too short for the cell to divide, organs and tissues degenerate. Telemorase has been the focus on many aging-related research efforts due to its ability to rebuild these telomeres and allow cells to divide indefinitely.

"Previous studies had suggested that once assembled, telomerase is available whenever it is needed," says Vicki Lundblad, professor and holder of Salk’s Ralph S. and Becky O'Connor Chair. "We were surprised to discover instead that telomerase has what is in essence an 'off' switch, whereby it disassembles."

The researchers say that finding a way to control this "off" switch could provide a way to slow down the telomere-shortening process, leading to treatments for age-related diseases and the ability to regenerate organs later in life.

Study senior author Lundblad and graduate student Timothy Tucey made the discovery in the yeast Saccharomyes cerevisiae. This is the same yeast used to make wine and bread and has previously been the subject of study by Lunblad's group aimed at laying the groundwork for guiding similar findings in human cells.

By developing a technique that allowed each component during cell growth and division – which involves the duplication of the entire genome – to be observed at very high resolution, the team was able to gain an understanding of how telomerase assembles.

They discovered that every time a cell divides, telomerase, minus a critical molecular subunit, sits ready to spring into action. When the genome has been fully duplicated, the missing subunit joins the party to form a complete, fully active telomerase complex that can replenish the ends of eroding chromosomes to ensure robust cell division.

To their surprise, Tucey and Lundblad discovered that immediately after the full telomerase complex has been assembled, it quickly disassembles to form an inactive "disassembly" complex. In other words, the switch is essentially flipped to the "off" position. They hypothesize that this may take place to keep telomerase at exceptionally low levels inside the cell.

While manipulating this on/off switch has the potential to encourage healthy cells to keep dividing and generating in old age, the opposite is also true. Because cancer cells rely on elevated telomerase levels to ensure unregulated cell growth, manipulating the "off" switch could help keep telomerase activity below that point.

The team's study appears in the journal Genes and Development.

Every two years Cologne in Germany goes photo crazy. Photokina is the focal point for everyone who is passionate about taking photographs or recording video, or sitting back to enjoy looking at both. Over the past week, Gizmag has covered the big news coming out of Germany. Now we take a look at some new releases that didn't make the front page, and catch up with some show favorites.

Nikon chose to break news of its new full-frame DSLR ahead of Photokina, but that didn't prevent us from pushing through the crowds at the Messe to grab a few brief moments with the mighty D750. Zooming in on a few sample shots taken at speed (6.5 fps) revealed very sharp and clear low light photos thanks to the high ISO range (and the high resolution of the 3.2-inch tilting monitor) of the 24 megapixel prothusiast camera. Autofocus was quick and quiet, and aperture adjustment during Full HD video recording was really smooth.

By contrast, Canon decided to wait for just before the doors were opened to the public to announce its Mark II EOS 7D. Enthusiast photographers were invited to test the continuous shooting prowess of this 20.2 MP camera by trying to snap shots of a soccer player firing a ball towards the line of trigger-happy Mark II testers. Yes, I had a go and can report being pretty impressed by the clear images of the projectile as it flew in my direction like a bat out of hell.

Gizmag also got to handle the powerful NX1 from Samsung, the enormous H5D-50c from Hasselblad and the heavy-but-beautifully-made Leica S (Type 007).

Music and video at the Red Bull stand was provided by a vehicle which looked like a London...

Unusually, if pressed to choose a booth favorite it wouldn't be the classy Leica hall and gallery. Pansonic's presence may have been a visual feast, and the Fujifilm booth buzzing with activity. But my pick would have to be the Airstream, long-board bench seats and music-and-video producing Volvo Sugga that was Red Bull's Illume Exhibition Tour stand. Most entertaining.

These weird magic tricks our brain play are simple enough to perform on yourself, and a few of them can be used make yourself more productive.

It probably comes as no surprise that your environment has a lot to do with your productivity. While we've talked about triggers in your workspace before, and temperature and lighting are big ones. In fact, as Leo Widrich points out at the Buffer blog, regulating both can provide a boon to your productivity, and you hardly have to lift a finger. Widrich points to one study from Cornell that examined temperature and productivity:

When temperatures were low (68 degrees or 20 degrees Celsius) employees made 44% more mistakes than at optimal room temperature (77 degrees or 25 degrees Celsius).

Essentially, you want to regulate the temperature in your office. That means grabbing a space heater (or air conditioner in the summer), or at least keeping yourself warm with a sweater. It's not just temperature, either. Lighting plays a role in productivity too. While direct research on lighting is still fresh, we do know that more exposure to daylight can imrpove productivity. While we've debunked the myth that getting up early makes you more productive, one big benefit of waking up earlier is that you get more time in the natural light of the sun.

That said, the wrong kind of lighting can cause eye fatigue and have a negative effect on your productivity. So, if your computer screen is getting a lot of glare, or you're forced to work under a direct light, it's important to prevent eyestrain by taking breaks, wearing computer glasses, or using an app like F.lux that changes the color temperature of your screen based on the time of the day. If you're the type who likes to focus in on a job, cut yourself off from the world, and power through work, it might sound counterintuitive that the ambient noise of a coffee shop can actually help you focus. As odd as it sounds, studies do show that the ambient buzz of a coffee shop makes us more productive. As The Wall Street Journal points out, it's all about hitting the right level of distraction to get that productive boost:

[This] adds to research suggesting that small doses of distraction—including hard-to-read fonts—prompt the mind to work at a more abstract level, which is also a more creative level. [...]There's a sweet spot between silence and din.

It's not exactly easy to take a nap in the middle of the day, but it turns out a perfectly timed nap boosts your productivity more than you'd think. The best time for a power nap is between 1:00 and 3:00 PM in the afternoon, and you should keep it at about 15 to 20 minutes for maximum benefit.

Our own Adam Dachis gave this a shot himself, and found that it worked well for him. A perfectly timed nap has all types of benefits, including boosting your memory, your cognitive ability, and enhancing your overall performance.

Timing the perfect nap is dependent on when you wake up in the morning, but this interactive nap wheel helps you nail down the right time. The perfect nap may be the laziest way to boost your productivity, but it's certainly one of the most effective.

Play Unfamiliar Music While You're Working

The direct effect of listening to music to boost productivity is still inconclusive, but we do know that music can increase your mood by releasing dopamine. To anyone who has cranked up their favorite song to power through a day of monotonous work this sounds like common sense, but it's possible that listening to unfamiliar music is actually better for focus. The music service Focus at Will describes it like so:

The single most important factor to consider when choosing a genre is what kind of music you usually listen to for fun and entertainment when you are not trying to be productive. And then, counter-intuitively, it's best to select the very opposite kind of music.... Why? Because your brain gets pleasure, releasing dopamine when it hears music you like and listen to a lot, and music that is associated with good times or strong memories of any kind will reduce the focus enhancing effects when used as a productivity tool. So if you never listen to classical music, try it for this, and the opposite is true, if you always listen to jazz, then try the ambient channel.

This approach doesn't necessarily work if you're a musician or you listen to music critically, but if you're the type to just throw something on in the background, playing music you don't know might be all you need to concentrate on the task at hand.

We'll end with one of the stranger research findings we've seen: looking at cute baby animals can actually improve your concentration and productivity. The study, conducted by Hiroshima University in Japan, found that looking at pleasent and cute images increases concentration. After looking at cute animals, participants in the study increased their performance in concentration tasks by an astounding 44 percent. Researchers were unclear of exactly why the pictures increased concentration, but they have a theory:

Caring for babies (nurturance) not only involves tender treatments but also requires careful attention to the targets' physical and mental states as well as vigilance against possible threats to the targets. If viewing cute things makes the viewer more attentive, the performance of a non-motor perceptual task would also be improved.

While it's by no means a definitive study, it echoes similar theories that temptations like reality TV and cute YouTube videos are beneficial for productivity as well. Next time you're feeling a little zapped of concentration, tune into some adorable animals for a couple minutes and see what happens. Photo by sunsets_for_you.


As with any little brain hack and power-up, overuse of these techniques will likely make them stop working. They're also not a replacement for a good productivity system and an optimized schedule. That said, if you're stuck one day and you can't seem to get things done, a change of location, a break to look at adorable animals, or some new music might be all you need.

Best exercise for obese youths analyzed

 


What exercise program can best fight the "epidemic" of teen obesity? According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics, by combining aerobic exercise with resistance training.

The Healthy Eating Aerobic and Resistance Training in Youth (HEARTY) study, led by researchers at the University of Calgary and University of Ottawa, involved 304 overweight teens in the Ottawa/Gatineau area between the ages of 14 to 18. All were given the same four weeks of diet counseling to promote healthy eating and weight loss before being randomly placed into four groups. The first group performed resistance training involving weight machines and some free weights; the second performed only aerobic exercise on treadmills, elliptical machines and stationary bikes; the third underwent combined aerobic and resistance training; and the last group did no exercise training.

"Obesity is an epidemic among youth," says Dr. Ron Sigal of the University of Calgary's Institute for Public Health and Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta. "Adolescents who are overweight are typically advised to exercise more, but there is limited evidence on what type of exercise is best in order to lose fat."

In the overall study population, each type of exercise reduced body fat significantly and similarly. All three exercise programs caused significantly more fat loss than in the diet-only control group. Among youths who completed at least 70 per cent of the study's exercise sessions, the percentage of body fat decreased "significantly more in those who did combined aerobic and resistance exercise than in those who only did aerobic exercise," says co-principal researcher Dr. Glen Kenny of the University of Ottawa. "Remarkably, among participants who completed at least 70 per cent of the prescribed exercise sessions, waist circumference decreased close to seven centimeters in those randomized to combined aerobic plus resistance exercise, versus about four centimeters in those randomized to do just one type of exercise, with no change in those randomized to diet alone."

Supervised by personal trainers, youths in the three exercise groups were asked to train four times per week for 22 weeks at community-based facilities. Changes in body fat were measured using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines. Because aerobic exercises such as cycling or jogging can be challenging for overweight people, resistance training is potentially attractive because excess body weight poses far less of a disadvantage, and gains in strength come much more quickly than gains in aerobic fitness.

Researchers hope that the study will contribute to a national debate about childhood and teenage obesity, potentially leading to a consistent, long-term strategy on how to best deal with the problem. Eighty per cent of overweight youth typically continue to be obese as adults, adversely affecting the quality of their lives and contributing to chronic disease problems. Adult obesity increases risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and disability.

Statin use during hospitalization for hemorrhagic stroke associated with improved survival

 


Patients who were treated with a statin in the hospital after suffering from a hemorrhagic stroke were significantly more likely to survive than those who were not, according to a study published today in JAMA Neurology. This study was conducted by the same researchers who recently discovered that the use of cholesterol-lowering statins can improve survival in victims of ischemic stroke.

Ischemic stroke is caused by a constriction or obstruction of a blood vessel that blocks blood from reaching areas of the brain, while hemorrhagic stroke, also known as intracerebral hemorrhage, is bleeding in the brain.

"Some previous research has suggested that treating patients with statins after they suffer hemorrhagic stroke may increase their long-term risk of continued bleeding," said lead author Alexander Flint, MD, PhD, of the Kaiser Permanente Department of Neuroscience in Redwood City, Calif. "Yet the findings of our study suggest that stopping statin treatments for these patients may carry substantial risks."

The study included 3,481 individuals who were admitted to any of 20 Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Northern California with a hemorrhagic stroke over a 10-year period. Researchers looked at patient survival and discharge 30 days after the stroke.

Patients treated with a statin while in the hospital were more likely to be alive 30 days after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke than those who were not treated with a statin — 81.6 percent versus 61.3 percent. Patients treated with a statin while in the hospital were also more likely to be discharged to home or an acute rehabilitation facility than those who were not — 51.1 percent compared to 35.0 percent.

Patients whose statin therapy was discontinued — that is, patients taking a statin as an outpatient prior to experiencing a hemorrhagic stroke who did not receive a statin as an inpatient — had a mortality rate of 57.8 percent compared with a mortality rate of 18.9 percent for patients using a statin before and during hospitalization.

The researchers concluded that statin use is strongly associated with improved outcomes after hemorrhagic stroke, and that discontinuing statin use is strongly associated with worsened outcomes after hemorrhagic stroke.

We drink more alcohol on gym days

 


A new Northwestern Medicine® study finds that on days when people exercise more -- typically Thursdays to Sundays -- they drink more alcohol, too.

This is the only study to use smartphone technology and a daily diary approach for self-reporting physical activity and alcohol use.

"Monday through Wednesday people batten down the hatches and they cut back on alcohol consumption," said David E. Conroy, lead author of the study. "But once that 'social weekend' kicks off on Thursdays, physical activity increases and so does alcohol consumption."

Conroy is a professor of preventive medicine and deputy director of the Center for Behavior and Health at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He also is a faculty affiliate of the Methodology Center at The Pennsylvania State University, where the research was conducted.

The study was published online in Health Psychology, an American Psychological Association journal.

"Insufficient physical activity and alcohol use are both linked to many health problems, and excessive alcohol use has many indirect costs as well," Conroy said. "We need to figure out how to use physical activity effectively and safely without having the adverse effects of drinking more alcohol."

One hundred and fifty study participants, ages 18 to 89, recorded their physical activity and alcohol use in smartphones at the end of the day. They did so for 21 days at a time, at three different times throughout one year.

Other studies on physical activity and alcohol relied on people self-reporting their behavior over the past 30 days.

"In this study, people only have to remember one day of activity or consumption at time, so they are less vulnerable to memory problems or other biases that come in to play when asked to report the past 30 days of behavior," Conroy said. "We think this is a really good method for getting around some of those self-report measurement problems."

The previous studies, which relied on 30-day self-reporting, concluded that physically active people tend to drink more alcohol -- something this study did not find.

"We zoomed in the microscope and got a very up-close and personal look at these behaviors on a day-to-day basis and see it's not people who exercise more drink more -- it's that on days when people are more active they tend to drink more than on days they are less active," Conroy said. "This finding was uniform across study participants of all levels of physical activity and ages."

Through future studies at the Center for Behavior and Health at Feinberg, Conroy hopes to discover what drives people to drink more on days they exercise more.

"Perhaps people reward themselves for working out by having more to drink or maybe being physically active leads them to encountering more social situations where alcohol is consumed -- we don't know," Conroy said. "Once we understand the connection between the two variables we can design novel interventions that promote physical activity while curbing alcohol use."

Reversing the effects of pulmonary fibrosis with a microRNA mimic

 


Yale University researchers are studying a potential new treatment that reverses the effects of pulmonary fibrosis, a respiratory disease in which scars develop in the lungs and severely hamper breathing.

The treatment uses a microRNA mimic, miR-29, which is delivered to lung tissue intravenously. In mouse models, miR-29 not only blocked pulmonary fibrosis, it reversed fibrosis after several days.

The findings were published Sept. 19 in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine.

"The mimic, when injected into the blood, goes to the lung and it has a sustained effect. We are very impressed that it can reverse fibrosis, not only prevent it," said Naftali Kaminski, M.D., a professor at Yale School of Medicine and section chief of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. He is a corresponding author of the study.

The research is a collaboration between Yale and miRagen Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical company based in Boulder, Colo. The company had developed miR-29 previously as a possible therapy for cardiac disease. Kaminski, whose group pioneered research in microRNA in lung fibrosis, saw the potential for use of miR-29 in pulmonary fibrosis, as did Eva van Rooij, the scientist who discovered the role for miR-29 in cardiac fibrosis and is a senior co-author on the paper.

"I'm particularly excited about working with this microRNA," said van Rooij, who now is at the Hubrecht Institute in the Netherlands. "All evidence points to it being a master regulator of fibrosis."

The next step, Kaminski said, will be to begin evaluating miR-29 as a therapeutic for human Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Once considered a rare disease, IPF now affects more than 200,000 people in the United States, where about 30,000 people die from IPF every year. The median survival from diagnosis is 3-5 years, and despite recent promising advances there is no intervention that reverses the disease.
